Hello everyone! Sokyin is come back again to share about the tourist
attractions in Jeongseon with all of you.
Samtan Art Mine(삼탄아트마인)
Samtan Art Mine is a
cultural art complex, transformed from an abandoned mine at the foot of
Hambaeksan Montain, the main production area of stone coal in Korea. The name “Samtan”
refers to Samcheok Tanjwa, one of the major coal mines in Korea, and ‘Art Mine’
plays on the history of the coal mine. There are many cultural art spaces
throughout the nation, but Samtan Art Mine attracts visitors for being located
inside an actual mine site. Opened in 1964 as an industrial establishment, the
mine operated until October 2001. Samtan Art Mine draws even deeper artistic
meaning due to this poignant history.
Place named <Venus from
Bubble> was a shooting location of famous K-drama in 2016, ‘Descendants of
the Sun'. In episode 12, Agus kidnapped Dr. Kang to his hideout and
blackmailed her to break up with Captain Yoo. This scene was also selected as
one of the iconic scene in ‘Descendants of the Sun’.
This place used to be a
shower room for miners last time and artists got an inspiration to link
<Venus From Bubble> to shower room. As we watched in a drama, the
combination of old shower room and Venues statue center a unique vibe and
featured Agus’s hideout place very well.

Auraji River(아우라지)
The name of Auraji is take
from the Jeongseon Arirang originated. This area has long been famous for its
beautiful, clean mountains and rivers. Its name means to meet as the waters of
Pyeongchang and Samcheok unite in this area. Part of the upper stream of
Namhangang River, Auraji was a famous starting point of log rafts transporting
timber to Hangyang, the original name of Seoul. The lyrics of Jeongseon Arirang
reveal the sadness and longing of a woman awaiting her husband who left for
business to a far-away place or left to transport timber. Today, numerous
tourists visit Auraji to enjoy its great scenic views or to see the symbol of a
maid who, gazing into the river, seems to be waiting for her lover to return.

Auraji Station (아우라지역)
Auraji is a train station
on the Jeongseon line located in Gangwondo. It is about 19.4 km away from
Jengsoen-eup, and is the meeting place of two streams, the Songcheon stream
from Gujeolli and Imgyemyeon’s Goljicheon stream, which flows down from Samcheok’s
Jungbongsan. The name of the station, Auraji, comes from the verb eoureuda,
meaning “be in harmony” in Korean. Auraji Station was once named after the
region, Yeoryang, but was changed to Auraji, which describes the unique
geographical features of the village. The area where the two streams meet and
become a river became a bustling business zone in the past, where rafts were
floated with lumber all the way to Seoul. It is quite a sight looking at the
beautiful scenery enveloped by the crystal-clear water and pebbles on the
riverside surrounded by Nuchusan, Sangwonsan, Okgapsan, Goyangsan, Ballonsan,
and the Wangjaesan Mountains. At the confluence of these two streams, a statue
of Virgin Auraji and a newly built pavilion rest on a hill in the middle of the
peaceful landscape. There are also rail bikes being operated at this station,
which run 7.2 km from Gujeolli Station to Auraji Station. Notably, this is the
birthplace of Jeongseon Arirang – Aejeongpyeon.
It is also one of the
shooting place of famous K-drama, ‘Kill Me, Heal Me’. Legend has it that there was a girl and a boy
who were deeply in love in this village. The girl lived in Yeoryang and the boy
in Gageum, with the Auraji Valley sitting in the middle. One day they were
going to pick some camellia flowers in Ssarigol Valley. However, torrential
downpours from the night before made the river overflow, making it impossible
to use the raft to see each other. Their heart was aching for they couldn’t see
each other. The lyrics of the traditional song Arirang were inspired by this
story:
“Rower in Auraji, listen to
me, please let me cross the river.
Beautiful camellia petals in Ssarigol Valley
are scattered around.
The beautiful camellia shed its petals and
piled up with dead leaves.
I miss my dearest one all year around and my
heart aches.”
The old rafts remain in
Gageum Village (also known as Gagumi) and Yeoryang village.
A camp site of about 2,000
square meters is open in the months of July and August each year. Many tourist

Jeongseon Rail Bike(정선레일바이크)
The rail bike in Jeongseon
Auraji is a new type of leisure sport that combines biking along a railway and
scenic views. Rail bike are commonly found in the mountainous region of Europe.
The sport makes use of an abandoned railway track that runs from Jeongseon
Auraji to Gujeol-ri. The total track is 7.2 kilometres long and is a continuous
descent that is easy to ride along clean valley waters and crimson red foliage.
There are 2-person (110 kilograms) and 4-person rail bikes (138 kilograms).
Despite its large size, a rail bike runs quite smoothly so it is sufficient for
one person to pedal a 4-person rail bike at speeds of 10-30 kilometres per
hour.
At the boarding area in
Gujeol-ri Station, there is a café named ‘A Grasshopper’s Dream.’ Housed in a
train, the café is the shape of a grasshopper. The rail bike starts in
